FAQ
Your questions, answered
Here are the questions we hear most often. For a personal answer with photos and videos, ask Sierra, our patient concierge.
General
Do I need a referral?
A referral is helpful but not required. You can call either office or request an appointment online.
Will I be asleep during surgery?
Many procedures can be done with in-office IV sedation, so you feel relaxed and remember little. Local anesthesia and nitrous oxide are also available.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. We offer CareCredit and Happen Bank financing and help you understand your insurance benefits before treatment.
Where are your offices?
We have offices in Northwest Reno near Somersett and in Fallon, serving Northern Nevada and Northeastern California.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
At what age should wisdom teeth be removed?
Many patients have them evaluated between ages 15 and 18. Removal in the late teens or early twenties is often easier because the roots are not fully formed and healing tends to be faster.
Does wisdom teeth removal hurt?
You should not feel pain during the procedure thanks to local anesthesia and sedation. Afterward, most patients describe soreness and swelling that improves each day, and EXPAREL can keep the area numb for up to 72 hours.
How long does wisdom teeth surgery take?
Most procedures take 30 to 60 minutes. Plan to be in the office for about 90 minutes to two hours including check-in and recovery.
How long is recovery after wisdom teeth removal?
Most people feel back to normal in 3 to 5 days. Swelling usually peaks around day 2 or 3, and the gums continue healing for 1 to 2 weeks.
Will I be asleep for wisdom teeth removal?
Most patients choose IV sedation, which lets you rest comfortably and remember little or nothing. Your surgeon will help you choose the right option for your health and comfort.
What can I eat after wisdom teeth removal?
Start with cool, soft foods such as yogurt, smoothies (no straw), mashed potatoes and soup that is not hot. Avoid crunchy, spicy or chewy foods for about a week.
Do I need all four wisdom teeth removed?
Not always. Your surgeon will look at each tooth on your imaging and only recommend removing teeth that are causing problems or are likely to.
Is wisdom teeth removal covered by insurance?
Many dental and medical plans cover part of the cost. Our team will check your benefits and give you an estimate before surgery.
Dental Implants
How long do dental implants last?
With good home care and regular dental visits, implants can last decades and often a lifetime. The crown on top may need replacing after 10 to 15 years.
Does getting a dental implant hurt?
Most patients report less discomfort than they expected. The area is fully numbed, sedation is available, and soreness afterward is usually mild for a few days.
How long does the dental implant process take?
From placement to final tooth is usually 3 to 6 months. If a bone graft is needed first, add a few months of healing.
Am I too old for dental implants?
There is no upper age limit. What matters most is your overall health and bone quality, which your surgeon will evaluate.
Can I get an implant if I have bone loss?
Often yes. A bone graft can rebuild the area so the implant has a stable foundation.
Are dental implants covered by insurance?
Some dental plans cover part of the cost. Our team will check your benefits, and financing is available through CareCredit and Happen Bank.
Who makes the crown on my implant?
Your general dentist or prosthodontist usually makes the final crown. We coordinate with them from planning through placement.
Bone Grafting
Is a bone graft painful?
The area is numbed and sedation is available, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Afterward most people have mild soreness for a few days.
Where does the graft material come from?
Grafts can come from donor bone, animal-derived bone or synthetic material, and sometimes your own bone. Your surgeon will explain the best choice for you.
How long after a bone graft can I get an implant?
Usually 3 to 6 months, depending on the graft size and location. In some cases the implant can be placed at the same time.
What is a sinus lift?
A sinus lift adds bone to the upper back jaw by gently raising the sinus floor, creating room for an implant where bone is too thin.
Do I need a bone graft after a tooth extraction?
If you are considering an implant later, socket preservation at the time of extraction can help keep the bone from shrinking.
Tooth Extractions
Does a tooth extraction hurt?
You should feel pressure but not pain during the procedure. Afterward, soreness is usually mild and improves within a few days.
How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?
Most people feel normal within 1 to 3 days. The gums fully close in 1 to 2 weeks.
What is dry socket?
Dry socket happens when the blood clot in the socket is lost too early, causing aching pain a few days later. Avoiding straws, smoking and spitting helps prevent it. Call us if you notice it.
Can I get a tooth pulled the same day?
For urgent pain or infection, call (775) 284-2500. We work to see urgent patients as quickly as possible.
Should I replace an extracted tooth?
Replacing a missing tooth helps prevent shifting and bone loss. A dental implant is the most natural option, and we can preserve bone at the time of extraction.
IV Sedation & Anesthesia
Will I be asleep during IV sedation?
You will be deeply relaxed and drowsy, and most people remember little or nothing. You breathe on your own throughout.
Is IV sedation safe?
Yes. Oral surgeons train in anesthesia, and we continuously monitor your heart rate, oxygen and breathing during your procedure.
Can I eat before IV sedation?
Usually no. You will receive specific fasting instructions. Following them is important for your safety.
Do I need a driver after sedation?
Yes. A responsible adult must drive you home and should stay with you for the rest of the day.
How long does sedation take to wear off?
Most people feel drowsy for several hours. Plan to rest the remainder of the day.
EXPAREL® Non-Opioid Pain Relief
Is EXPAREL an opioid?
No. EXPAREL is a non-opioid local anesthetic that numbs the surgical area.
How long does EXPAREL last?
It can provide relief for up to 72 hours after surgery.
Will I still need pain medication with EXPAREL?
Many patients need less pain medication. Your surgeon may recommend over-the-counter medicine as needed.
Can teenagers receive EXPAREL?
EXPAREL is approved for patients 6 years and older. Your surgeon will decide if it is right for your teen.
Expose & Bond for Impacted Canines
What does it mean when a canine tooth is impacted?
It means the tooth is stuck under the gum or in the bone and cannot come in by itself.
How long does it take for the tooth to move into place?
It usually takes several months to a year, depending on how far the tooth needs to move.
Is expose and bond painful?
The area is numbed and sedation is available. Most patients have mild soreness for a day or two.
What happens if an impacted canine is not treated?
It can damage nearby roots, form a cyst or leave a gap. Early treatment gives the best chance of saving the tooth.
CBCT 3D Imaging
Is a CBCT scan safe?
Yes. It uses a lower radiation dose than a medical CT and is only recommended when it improves your care.
How long does a 3D dental scan take?
The scan itself takes less than a minute.
Why do I need a 3D scan instead of a regular X-ray?
A 3D scan shows depth and the exact position of nerves, sinuses and bone, which helps your surgeon plan safer, more precise treatment.
TMJ Treatment & Botox
Does Botox help TMJ pain?
For many people with muscle-related jaw pain or clenching, Botox relaxes the overworked muscles and reduces pain.
How long does Botox for TMJ last?
Results typically last about three to four months.
Will Botox change how my face looks?
It is placed in the jaw muscles. Some people notice a slightly slimmer jawline over time.
Do I need surgery for TMJ?
Most TMJ problems improve without surgery. Surgery is considered only when other treatments have not helped.
Facial Trauma & Injury Repair
What should I do if a tooth gets knocked out?
Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse gently, place it back in the socket if you can, or keep it in milk. Call (775) 284-2500 immediately — the first hour matters most.
How do I know if my jaw is broken?
Signs include pain, swelling, a bite that feels off, or trouble opening your mouth. Seek care right away. For severe injuries, call 911.
Do you treat sports injuries?
Yes. We treat sports-related injuries to the teeth and jaw and can discuss custom mouthguards with your dentist to prevent future injuries.
Frenectomy (Tongue & Lip Tie)
What is a tongue tie?
A tongue tie is a tight band of tissue under the tongue that limits how far the tongue can move.
How long does a frenectomy take?
Usually 15 to 30 minutes.
Is a frenectomy painful?
The area is numbed. Most patients feel mild soreness for a few days.
Oral Pathology & Cancer Screening
When should I worry about a mouth sore?
If a sore, patch or lump lasts more than two weeks, have it checked by your dentist or an oral surgeon.
Does an oral biopsy hurt?
The area is numbed first. Most people have mild soreness for a few days.
How long do biopsy results take?
Results usually return within about a week. We will contact you to review them.
