After surgery
Post-operative instructions
Most patients feel noticeably better within a few days. These steps help you heal comfortably. Call our office anytime you have a question about your recovery.
The first 24 hours
- Bite gently on gauze for 30 to 60 minutes; replace as needed for light oozing.
- Apply ice packs to the cheeks, 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.
- Rest with your head elevated.
- Do not spit, rinse forcefully, smoke or drink through a straw.
Eating and comfort
- Start with cool, soft foods like yogurt, smoothies (with a spoon) and mashed potatoes.
- Take medications as directed. EXPAREL patients often need little or no opioid medication.
- After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals.
When to call us
Call the office if you have heavy bleeding that does not slow with pressure, fever, increasing swelling after day three, or pain that is not controlled by your medication. For emergencies, call 911.
